Microbiome Test Interpretation: What Your Results Can and Cannot Tell You

Consumer and clinical microbiome reports — including Tiny Health-like reports — describe ecology, not destiny. BiomeLogic reads them as habitat signals, not diagnoses or supplement maps.

What microbiome tests can show

Relative abundances of organisms, broad community shifts, presence/absence of selected taxa, and ecological patterns suggestive of habitat disruption. People who use platforms like Tiny Health-like reports often need help understanding what the data does and does not prove.

What this test cannot prove

  • Causation between any single taxon and a symptom
  • Functional output of the community (relative abundance ≠ function)
  • Mucosal or small-intestinal ecology (stool ≠ mucosa, colon ≠ small bowel)
  • Whether to take any supplement, probiotic, or antimicrobial

Common interpretation traps

  • Reading 'low butyrate producers' as 'take butyrate' instead of asking why the habitat shifted
  • Treating Proteobacteria expansion as an infection rather than an oxygen / nitrate / inflammation signal
  • Assuming Akkermansia, Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, or Faecalibacterium values mean the same thing in every host
  • Confusing relative abundance with absolute load

The BiomeLogic mechanistic lens

  • Habitat-first reading: oxygen gradient, bile flow, motility, immune tone
  • Mechanistic synthesis across stool, OAT, breath, and bloodwork rather than one report
  • Explicit uncertainty: what the data supports vs. what is inference
  • Clinician-discussion framing rather than supplement lists

Discussing this with your clinician

Bring this synthesis to your clinician as a structured set of questions about candidate mechanisms — not as a diagnosis or a prescription. BiomeLogic does not order tests, recommend supplements, or replace clinical care.
